Limb for the limbless

Giving the physically challenged Nigerian hope for tomorrow...

Shuga Limb Foundation

Shuga Limb Foundation was established in November 2009. The Founder, Akinloye Tofowomo, the owner of the reputable band in Nigeria, ‘the Shuga Band’, had polio at the tender age of 5. Despite his wherewithal, he could not get calipers comfortable enough to support his movement. He then went to India, and to his surprise, he got the calipers in 24 hours; which propelled his actions to believing it can be replicated for helpless Nigerians.

It remains astounding, how our African society clings on to anachronic beliefs, attitude and reactions to people living with disabilities (PLD). For too long, our society has held on to the belief that a physically challenged person is condemned to a life of misery and unfulfillment.

Indeed, several reasons can be attributed to disability which include but not limited to poor nutrition, dangerous working conditions, poor health and maternity care, poor hygiene, road accidents, natural disasters.

The psychological effect of being physically challenged can be very overwhelming for most of those who live with it. These people are often treated with little or no respect, conditioned to a life of pity. Every attempt to make progress is belittled and the society continually reminds them of their weaknesses instead of their strengths.
